Pem wears a "Pema Chorten," the traditional pagoda-shaped hat of the women of Laya, a community of Bhutanese villages along the Tibetan border. "Pema Chorten" means lotus temple—a tantric symbol of a woman's goddess nature. The hats are worn permanently by girls from the time they enter puberty and become temples of precious human rebirth.
