This Lopen Gembo Dorji, former Secretary General of the Zhung Dratshang and my dear friend for decades, at the mouth of Guru Rinpoche's sacred Tshephu cave in Punakha Valley. Legend has it that following Guru’s retreat at Maratika in Nepal, he embarked upon a pilgrimage to this sacred cave, where he received a vision and teaching of the resplendent Amitayus, the “Buddha of Long Life.” The cave contains a spring of sacred “long life” water, as well as other relics associated with Guru Rinpoche. I first met Lopen Gembo in Bhutan in the ‘90s and, a decade later, he lived with our family in Honolulu while studying at the East-West Center, making frequent trips to our home on Kauai. It was Gembo, along with several other monks, who first conceived of the Bhutan Masters project around our kitchen table.
