
While retracing my 1973 journey through northern Pakistan, I stopped in Gilgit, where I had spent several memorable nights at the Haidari Hotel, designed like an ancient caravanserai. While the Haidari Hotel had been shuttered, along with many other local businesses, as the result of sectarian violence, I made a number of photos of the charismatic shopkeepers and their clients in the town's commercial district adjacent to the old hotel.
