Mr. Osco was a retired sugar worker, a laying on the hands healer, and single man from the Philippines--born on the little island of Siquijor. He was living in a shack on a month to month lease when he and all his neighbors in Niumalu were served eviction notices. The landowner, Kanoa Estate, wanted to clear out the tenants to make way for resort development. The neighborhood organized and began public protests. Mr. Osco was quoted in the local newspaper saying, "We not going move!" The struggle lasted for years, but the tenants won. David beat Goliath.
