Awa'awa'puhi is the deepest and narrowest of the Na Pali Coast valleys. Here the Hawaiians built a sophisticated and sustainable agricultural complex that supported a significant population for centuries. Awa'awa'puhi's spring-fed stream provided perennial irrigation water to the intricate ditch system feeding the stone-walled taro terraces covering the valley floor. One of the most spectacular, challenging, and unique landscapes in the world, America's 17th Poet Laureate, W.S. Merwin, called these ramparts "The Folding Cliffs."
