Another one of my favorite Taylor Camp portraits—a classic hippie couple—in a scene that captures the simple aesthetic of their home. Windows that went to the ceiling and clear plastic roofing (reflected in the mirror) provided high key lighting and an uplifting feeling.  Soon after I made this photo, John re-roofed the house with corrugated iron sheeting—more durable and weatherproof but the magic light was gone.

“John was an awesome musician.  He had this band called THC, Taylor Hippie Camp. He was the organ player, a really, really good organ player and we used to have incredible dances where he'd be playing with Buffalo Bill and the other guys in the band.  John came from New York City, from the Bronx.  I came to Taylor Camp and I met him – I was just lying there getting some sun right at the stream – this beautiful stream that goes out into the ocean.  He just walked up, and I met him, and we just fell in love and we were so in love.  I mean, he was the love of my life. About a year after we left Taylor Camp, John was diagnosed with cancer and he passed just before our daughter, Genie, turned 3-years-old.” — Marie Calagna
