So, I ignored this image when I saw it on the contact sheet and continued ignoring it for another 30 years until we began searching for a composition that would square crop into a book cover with room for title text. That’s when “Diane Looking Down (with Krishna and the Gopis)” struck me as both enigmatic and evocative, and became not only the book cover but the DVD case and the film poster—the symbolic figure of the project.
I overlooked this photo of Diane Elizabeth for decades—never printing or publishing it until 2006. I had the camera on a tripod preparing for some portraits and snapped this candid image while Diane thought I was still fooling around with the camera settings. It’s a rare image for me because I prefer making portraits with the subject fully present and engaged, looking directly into the camera.
