“Every summer our family would camp for a few weeks at Haena Beach Park near Taylor Camp. We were from that side of the island but had moved to Wailua when our Dad and Uncle joined the police department and mom became matron at the jail.”

“Me and my big sister were pretty young, I was about six or seven, but old enough to do things on our own. It was her idea that we could sneak down to Taylor Camp, if we told our mother that we were going shell hunting. Then we could go and see ‘naked people’!  So, all the kids went with us and, oh my god, naked people!  We usually went down there in the late afternoon during volleyball time when everything was flipping and flopping and we’d be sitting in the bushes trying to look, and not trying to look—you know, covering our eyes and looking through our fingers. It was a confusing time.” — Sandy Kaauwai
