{"title":"Historic Kauai","description":"\u003cp\u003eI made these photos in 1975-1976 for \"The Kauai Album,\" a book of historic architecture published by the Kauai Historical Society. I asked the Historical Society Board if I could include a photo or two of Taylor Camp's treehouses in the book. While I saw Taylor Camp as a unique and significant example of whimsical 60's counterculture architecture—the ultimate hippie fantasy—the board members were horrified at the idea. So I decided to make an in-depth architectural survey of the treehouses and environmental portraits of many community members—images that decades later would gain international recognition for both their artistic and historical value--becoming the foundation of my book \"Taylor Camp\" and our award-winning film, The Edge of Paradise. In 1933 Mr. Ching died, leaving his widow, Dang Ha Ching from Hanapepe, to run the operations and raise their eight children through the worst of the depression. To support her family, Mrs. Ching had to sell her jewelry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring World War Two, the rice market boomed, demand and prices spiked, and Mrs. Ching provided for and educated her children. However, by the '70s, taro had replaced rice, the sugar and pineapple plantations were going broke, and the North Shore population was shrinking. Unemployment forced many locals to leave the community—searching for work far from home. To generate income and traffic, Ching Young Store added the post office and rented the rice mill to a group of Taylor Camp hippies for an organic restaurant. In those days rent was cheap. The Ching Young Store started stocking granola.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the mainland, the murder of Kennedy and King, Vietnam war protests, campus riots, and burning ghettos drove many disillusioned and disgusted youth to look for someplace better. In 1937, Kenichi Tasaka rolled it on coconut trunks to this location over a mile away on the south (\u003cem\u003emauka\u003c\/em\u003e) side of Kuhio Highway. The lily pond was created by Chock Chin before the Tasaka's took over the lease on the property owned by the Wilcox estate. Kash worked his family's rice mill in Hule'ia, Lihue, until 1930 when the family bought Hotel Hayashi in Nawiliwili and converted it to Hotel Kuboyama. The photo was taken from the old wagon trail above the Goo home. That trail connected Kalihiwai to Wanini and Hanalei long before the construction of the paved road that now cuts the bluff at kilohana.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOld man Goo, “The Pake” (Uncle or “Chinese” in Hawaiian), built the barn in the center of the photo to store rice, tools, and equipment. His coolies bunked on the second floor—every night, as many as 20 smoked their opium up there before falling asleep. The lean-to housed the kitchen where Delbert’s mom cooked for the crew. The mortar and stone threshing floor was just beyond the barn. The house and outbuildings on the hill were on a separate “kuleana” (traditional Hawaiian smallholding) owned by relatives of the Kong Lung family.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“The Pake” expanded his plantation far beyond the old Hawaiian taro “lo’i” (pond fields) and improved the valley’s irrigation system. To grow taro, the Hawaiians diverted only the low flow volume from the Kalihiwai River. Taro is a 13-month crop requiring a near continuous and substantial flow of cool, clean water, so the Hawaiians sized their pondfield plantings based on the year round availability of dependable base flows. Rice is a 4 to 5 month crop planted in the wet season and harvested in the dry. Rice paddies require a quick fill then just enough to keep them full—not the constant circulation of cool, clean water taro needs. So the Old Man increased the capacity of the diversion and irrigation ditch to handle higher flows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe coolies dug a barge canal from the river to a landing in front of the barn. The canal was called “Pake Ditch” and is still call “Pake Ditch” to this day.  The Old Man bought unhulled rice (paddy) from all the farmers in the valley. They’d bring their paddy in wagons and on pack horses from as far as Kakimoto and Matagawa above Namahana, four miles up the valley as the “pueo” flys--double that on the old valley trail with its dozens of low water fords. The Old Man would mill the other farmers’ rice along with his, bag it, barge it to the river mouth, load it into whale boats and row it out to schooners anchored in the bay, bound for Honolulu.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Old Man eventually bought many of the kuleana in the valley but most of his plantation was on land leased from the German owned Lihue Plantation. The Germans’ land was confiscated in World War One and bought by Amfac. The 1957 tsunami  washed away all the buildings on the valley floor, destroyed the plantation‘s infrastructure, and filled the Pake Ditch to the top of its banks with debris. That was the end of rice in Kalihiwai. In the 70’s Amfac sold to developers. By then all the rice land was covered with towering, impenetrable hau bush jungle and under several feet of water--though Delbert had kept 5-acres just below the house cleared and drained.  There he grew papaya and eggplant, but without Pake Ditch to drain it, the rest of the valley was useless—a swamp. Delbert showed me this photo and said, “Let’s go partners. Buy the place. Nobody wants it. We can cut a good deal. Most of that swamp is 4 to 6 feet above the river.  I know how to drain it.” Delbert owned most of the kuleana in the valley and traded them to the developer for 15 acres. Though the flood zone kuleana were worth little, the developer was able to relocate the kuleana, along with their house permit rights, to lots they subdivided above the valley along Kalihiwai Road. The County encourage this transfer as the new lots were far above the tsumami limits where their was vehicular access, water, utilities and County services. I got the remaining 25 acres, most of it underwater, at very good terms. As Delbert said, “Nobody wants it!”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photo became the site plan for our development. Delbert knew where to find the old Pake Ditch under the tidal wave debris. He knew where the old building foundations were buried, where the culverts and roads should go, and where to excavate the old stream bed that once connected Kahoe Falls, the main source of the swamp, with Pake Ditch. Once we had the valley drained, Delbert gave me an old plans shack he got from a friend working on a road project. We set the little shack on concrete blocks over his father’s threshing floor. At the door we placed a broken chunk of brick and mortar stairs we dug out of the ditch. Maile and I spent every weekend working and playing in the valley. We had a shovel for our outhouse, bathed in the ditch and slept in sleeping bags on the plans table. Of course we went to Uncle Delbert’s for dinner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe historic and far-reaching accomplishments of his father, The Pake, plus Delbert’s vision, knowledge, capacity for making deals and taking chances, gave our families a great gift—enough to do something but not enough to do nothing. Now there are four generations of family in the valley: homes, orchards, gardens, pastures, lo’i and livestock—owned by Goos, Walters, Chandlers, Keleiohis, and Yukimuras. Soon after, Don, a young and very talented mechanic from the mainland, leased the garage. I cooked over a stone fire pit in the yard or on a Coleman stove set up on a picnic bench under a tarp. My closest neighbor was Delbert Goo—an excellent cook! So just about every evening, I just happened to stop by around dinner time, and the Goo family was okay with that. They took pity on me, a skinny, hungry haole, and I helped around their farm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThough he was a truck farmer, Delbert's main cash crop was \u003cem\u003epakalolo\u003c\/em\u003e (marijuana). His next most valuable commodity was fighting chickens, and he was a successful gambler. Delbert's father came to Kauai from Southern China in the late 19th Century. He built one of Kauai's most extensive rice plantations with its own mill—converting ancient Hawaiian taro terraces for rice cultivation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn those days, growing and milling rice took lots of labor. Delbert's dad imported Chinese imigrants (coolies) to work his plantation, giving them room and board in a bunkhouse above the mill. Old Man Goo had about 30 coolies—all opium addicts. The deal was room, board, \u003cem\u003eand opium\u003c\/em\u003e. To secure his supply chain, the Old Man sent young Delbert to Iolani School, one of Honolulu's most exclusive prep schools. (Even back then, arch-rival of Barry Obama's Punahou.) As a regular buyer, little Delbert became familiar with the Chinatown underworld. Every month he would take the inter-island steamer back to Kauai, wearing his Iolani uniform, carrying Papa's dope in his tin lunchbox. When Delbert returned from the war in Korea, Papa was dead. The farm had been converted from rice to truck crops, and Delbert had a ready market in Chinatown for pot and fighting chickens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDelbert and I became partners in an agricultural subdivision covering much of his father's old rice farm. When JoAnn and I first met, he pulled me aside and said, \"You better marry that \u003cem\u003ewahini\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eJapanee\u003c\/em\u003e the best in bed…\" I figured Delbert should know. His Chinatown friends ran all the whore houses in Honolulu. Besides, he was married to Geri, a \"Japanee.\" \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI built our family home—a little country house—down the road from Delbert's. However, we still had our place in Lihue, where JoAnn worked 18 to 20 hour days as Kauai's mayor. My daughter Maile and I preferred Kalihiwai. They knew Delbert had \"guests.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOccasionally, after a gangland incident hit the front pages of the Honolulu papers, Delbert would have a guest from the old neighborhood. There was one guest that I will never forget. A pure Hawaiian gentleman, well over six-feet and 200 pounds, sleek and sinewy, shaved head, soft-spoken, zen-like, Delbert's guest didn't smile or frown. He was a quiet man with a Royal bearing—a natural nobility. Only his eyes hinted at his deadly profession.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe guest would sometimes appear before the headlines and stay for several weeks, renting a car, leaving the valley at 4:00 am every other morning, and drive to Ke'e at the end of the road. He'd run to Kalalau and back, 22-miles of treacherous mountain terrain, rated as one of the most difficult and dangerous trails in the world. An archeological wonderland of ancient Hawaiian culture. Past Hanakapiai, the route opens a metaphysical door. It takes one time traveling back through the ruins of pre-contact civilization. The guest told me that the run was good conditioning, but the teachings of the ancient stone walls, rock terraces, and luakini temples were his training's goal—his spiritual practice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust after the incident would appear in the Honolulu papers, this refined, well-read, Hawaiian gentleman would suddenly return. He never charged, had a pure healing spirit, and was a master of traditional Hawaiian medicine. Delbert's guest would massage friends for three or four hours, never charging, never watching the time, working until you were \"done.\" The depth of pleasure, out-of-body relaxation, and spiritual realignment the guest gave his friends came from his ability to turn the brutal arts of death into the healing arts of life. It was later torn down, leaving only the pink art deco Aloha Theatre standing nearby.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u2028As a 2020 Civil Beat article by Brittany Lyte notes, \"Once the economic hub of Kauai, Hanapepe was where you’d go in the early 1900s if you wanted to buy a car, clothes, jewelry, the latest home appliance or a ticket to see chorus girls in a live stage show.\u2028You could get liquored up here, one of few places on Kauai that was not under strict plantation oversight. There were bowling alleys, an arcade and two roller skating rinks.\" There were also a couple of opium dens for the old Chinese rice plantation laborers. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis explains why \"Kauai's biggest little town\" had not one, but two, local theaters catering to the local plantation community, often offering shows from the workers' home countries across the Pacific (both specialized in porn as a last resort before eventually closing).  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was intrigued by the gargoyles above the ticket booth windows and, after making an architectural photo from the street in 1976 for the Kauai Album book project, I set up my view camera for a close up of the gargoyles. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u2028When I saw George Kawamura riding down the sidewalk on his bike, I decided that George and his bike were what I needed to complete the composition. George was a willing but silent subject. For most of those years, his wife Lily and their two daughters, Phoebe and Ethel, lived with him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Gulick-Rowell House is the oldest home on Kauai and the second-oldest in Hawai'i, admired for its architecture and historic value. What caught my eye were the clotheslines on the upstairs lanai and the plants circling the first floor. I’ve always believed a historic building's story isn’t complete without remembering the people who lived there – the human touch. So when Mr. Wramp stepped outside in his rubber boots to water his plants, it felt like the record was complete.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMissionary Peter Gulick built the home in 1829. Originally from New Jersey, Gulick and his wife, Fanny, arrived in Honolulu in 1828, as part of the third company of missionaries sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to Hawai'i. The Gulicks were assigned to the mission station at Waimea, where they joined the efforts of Reverends Samuel and Elizabeth Whitney to expand evangelical and educational work among the Native Hawaiians. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe governor of Kauai, Kaikiōʻewa, provided a temporary Hawaiian-style thatch-and-pole house, but the couple soon began constructing a more permanent home using coral limestone quarried from nearby reefs by Hawaiian laborers for the foundation, floor, and walls, along with lumber from the upland forests nearby. Gulick's early duties at Waimea focused on preaching the Christian gospel in outdoor meetings and simple chapels, often starting with basic translations to convey core doctrines. He also introduced the Hawaiian alphabet developed by earlier missionaries to enable Native Hawaiians to read scripture and other educational materials. In addition to their evangelical work, the Gulicks supported the establishment of Hawai'i's first commercial sugar plantation at Kōloa. He later contributed to the establishment of schools on O’ahu and Moloka’i, including the foundation of Punahou School in 1841. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the Gulicks vacated the house in 1835 when they transferred to the missionary station in Kōloa, the house remained empty until 1846 when it was occupied by Reverend George Rowell and his wife Malvina, who came to Kauai from New Hampshire in 1843. Rowell was an accomplished carpenter who built two churches in Waimea during his term there, as well as expanding the family home, adding lumber shipped in from the West Coast. The Rowells remained in the home until George's death in 1884. After that the home was occupied by various townspeople, including the postmaster, the sheriff, who reportedly used the basement as a jail, and various schoolteachers and church members. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe house has been on the National and State Historic Register since 1972 and unoccupied since 2003. In 2006, the Historic Hawaii Foundation: placed Gulick-Rowell House on the list of Hawaii’s Most Endangered Historic Places. I made a few photos from the beach just before sunset, then walked out onto the pier to photograph back toward the coast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCheered by the soft, warm, low winter light bouncing from the water, I was delighted to see my friend Koichi Masaki talking to some fishermen at the end of the pier. I liked to call Koichi my friend, though I'm sure he never remembered my name. He was everybody's friend—one of those people you like at first sight, with a firm, calloused handshake that wasn't aggressive but respectful—and he had an amused grin with smiling eyes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBorn at Mana Camp in 1900, Koichi was a fisherman, a boat captain, a West Side character, a firebrand, and a local legend. He got his first boat in 1916, a 32-footer, and quickly mastered trolling and bottom fishing. By 1928, he owned the \"Seagull\", a 52-footer that led Kauai's 38-boat-strong fishing fleet working the waters around Ni'ihau and Kaula Rock.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe discovered a reef not found on any charts after consistently catching shallow-water fish like Ulua, Kahala, and Uku in the open ocean. The Coast Guard couldn't find this phantom reef and asked Koichi to lead them to it so they could add it to their charts. Locals still call it Masaki's Reef.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the early 50's, the Military began using these abundant fishing grounds for target practice. Koichi was outraged. In a 1987 article in the Star-Bulletin and Advertiser, Jan TenBruggencate interviewed Koichi. He lamented the death of the fleet and commercial fishing on Kauai, blaming the bombing of their grounds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"When they bomb Kaʻula, you can't catch one tuna,\" Koichi said back in 1987. \"You can feel the blast 20 miles away. Before, we had surplus fish. There were more fish in Hawaiian waters than you could sell. Today, Kauai has no fishing vessels to catch the long-line tuna. The traditional fishermen and their grandsons quit fishing.
