The beams and flooring were salvaged from the Hanalei Bridge when the bridge deck was replaced. The joint was passed and just as Paolo took a hit I was ready to get to work. Keeping with my practice for most Taylor Camp environmental portraits taken beneath clear plastic roofs, I set the Nikor PC at f16, over exposed by two stops and underdeveloped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Well, I arrived at Taylor Camp with a group of Italian friends and we followed a little trail into the woods. And as I was walking all these things started appearing. And I was thinking, hmm, you know, coming from a different culture in Italy, I thought, wow, this is different. And then as I got closer to the tree houses, I remember seeing this naked girl walking toward us on the trail, and I thought, wow, this is really interesting (laughing). And I thought, oh my God, (laughing) this is the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Drugs? Yeah, we got stoned, smoked a little pot, but not like -- nothing very excessive, maybe a couple of mushrooms once in a while. You know, it was the culture at that time, you know 60’s, 70’s, so drugs came with the territory. But I met a lot of great people there.  I look back, I see a lot of these people, they are still married, they have kids, their kids are married, they have families, you know, in a society right now that -- you know, it's not like that. You know what I mean? One of his mantras that I still remember was, “Chicks with checks.”  That caught my attention and I climbed up into his tree house and asked if I could take his picture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBill was the younger brother of Eduardo Malapit, the country prosecutor who drafted an ordinance against hitch-hiking to harass the hippies, and then won a seat on the County Council for his strong stand against Taylor Camp. Eduardo was then elected Mayor, promising to close the camp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“I was Mayor of Kauai from 1974 to 1982. Lot of changes, all good. I was a prosecutor before that. We had a lot of these guys, and they started hitch hiking and they started to camp here and there, sleep down at the beach. That was the beginning of it all. We had a plantation economy at that time and people just did not like Taylor Camp because it was different. I got complaints.  People did not like hippies, they were planting marijuana all over the place. They were throwing marijuana seeds in the river, then the marijuana would be growing on the banks. I mean, it was an awesome cave. We'd climb down into the cave, dive into the water, and then we'd swim underwater and surface in this little lava hollow. We’d be treading water or hanging onto the lava walls and eyes would slowly adjust and then we could see light shining through the water from far below. The cave was pitch black, but the water was a deep turquoise blue. We called it the Blue Room and we would do this every Sunday. The water was cold, so afterwards we’d go to the beach, lie in the warm sand and pick shells. I found a suitable background with good light and Gary stood at attention all the while I set up my tripod. We got to the bottom of Kapaia hill less than a quarter of a mile from the hospital and Emma started to crown.  We pulled over behind the La Luna restaurant and I had her at the backseat of the car. It was a turquoise Datsun. I remember looking down at her, and she looked like the Krishna baby, it was the most incredible thing. Windows that went to the ceiling and clear plastic roofing (reflected in the mirror) provided high key lighting and an uplifting feeling.  Soon after I made this photo, John re-roofed the house with corrugated iron sheeting—more durable and weatherproof but the magic light was gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“John was an awesome musician.  He had this band called THC, Taylor Hippie Camp. He was the organ player, a really, really good organ player and we used to have incredible dances where he'd be playing with Buffalo Bill and the other guys in the band.  John came from New York City, from the Bronx.  I came to Taylor Camp and I met him – I was just lying there getting some sun right at the stream – this beautiful stream that goes out into the ocean.  He just walked up, and I met him, and we just fell in love and we were so in love.  I mean, he was the love of my life. Bad-tempered and anti-social, Bill was not a happy camper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Bill helped me build my house in Kalalau,” explained Scott Mitchell, Bill’s good friend and a Vietnam infantry vet. “Everybody from camp told me he was a mean drunk, but in Kalalau there wasn’t any booze so I never saw that Bill. I thought he was a sweet guy.  One day we hiked into Hanalei to get supplies and I bought a six-pack. We hadn’t had much to eat for days.  After two beers, Bill told me, ‘Fuck you, Scotty! Fuck you!.’  Bill grabbed another beer and staggered off toward the beach. I went to buy food. When I got back I found him sitting in a beach park garbage can passed out.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter camp closed, Bill moved to Honolulu, met Setsuko, a wonderful woman from Japan, got sober and had a successful career as a club musician.
